Spain

A European gem, Spain is more modest than France and Italy, with a less discovered (but no less plentiful) bounty of rugged beauty, history, cuisine and design.

Spain's cultural diversity is expressed in music and dance, from the passionate tradition of Flamenco (best seen in a tiny old tavern in Andalucia) to the contemporary rhythms of Spanish funk (best heard in Barcelona's hip tapas bars).

Spain's distinctive architectural heritage spans from grand Moorish castles to Gaudi's whimsical motifs to the clean undulating lines of Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Walk the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella, run with the bulls in Pamplona, taste wine in the caves of Rioja, or sit upon the rock of Gibraltar gazing across at Morocco. Spain is a country you need to uncover slowly, over many visits.

A postcard from Spain...

I'm sitting on the roof terrace of our stylish Barcelona apartment with a crisp glass of Albarino.

In one direction I can see the Mediterranean sparkling in the evening sun and in the other the many steeples of Barcelona including the Sagrada Familia spires and the medieval bell towers in our neighbourhood.

We have had a fantastic time exploring the world of design here, from the sleek and contemporary to the whimsy of Gaudi and his colleagues. The architecture in this city is truly unique.

I love the cobbled corners of the Gothic Quarter as well as the incredible tiles and mosaics of Passeig de Gracia. The markets are fantastic and the tapas bars are brimming every evening with hungry patrons winding down from work.

We spent a few days up the stunning coastline. In Cadaques we had a private visit of Dali's house as well as one of our most memorable meals ever in a tiny out-of-the-way Bodega that we found.

In Roses we were lucky enough to score a table at the famous El Bulli! It's almost impossible to get in and usually it's booked out years in advance. What an incredible experience. The chef Ferran Adria was so gracious and the meal was unlike any gastronomic adventure we had ever had. Remarkable!

Tomorrow we head south to Andalucia, into the country of the Moors for our last few days. Things just keep getting better wherever we go!

Let us know if you'd like to find flamenco in an ancient taverna in Seville.
