Dockside on the Isla Mujeres
"This was my first trip to Mexico. I didn't know what to expect as I'm not a sun and sand person. You opened my eyes to a rich and stunning country with a moving history and generous people. Ten days was not long enough to experience the real Mexico, but it was just the right amount to want to go back for more. I've even signed up for Spanish lessons, so I can better chat with the locals next time!"

Mexico

It's not merely a winter escape. Mexico is a place to immerse oneself in a layered culture that has been shaped by ancient civilizations, European conquerors, and modern industrialists.

From the white sands and turquoise waters of its Caribbean coast to the traditional haciendas of its colonial heartland to the frenetic streets of Mexico City, you'll find that there's more to Mexico than you first expected.

We find ourselves back there year after year, taking in our favourite small-town festivals, jotting down recipes for "mole", shopping for hammocks at a roadside market, and dining at beachside restaurants where shoes are optional.

A postcard from Mexico...

When we told our friends we were spending two weeks in Mexico, they pictured us sitting on a beach sipping and endless supply of fruity cocktails. This trip has been far from typical!

I'm sitting in the grand lobby of our eco-lodge right now, under a soaring palapa roof, surrounded by greenery as far as the eye can see. We're close to the border of Belize at the moment, in a hidden part of the Quintana Roo known only by well-heeled Mexicans and in-the-know adventurers.

By day we climb the remains of ancient Mayan temples or take mountain bike rides through the jungle to find toucans and howler monkeys. There's a serene, glass-like lake nearby where we were led on a guided kayak safari in search of lazing crocodiles.

By night we dine on sumptuous gourmet meals prepared by some of the most creative chefs in Latin America. Tomorrow we leave soft adventure behind and drive north towards Merida.

We're booked at a colonial-era Hacienda that has been lovingly restored by a famous Mexican film-maker and his wife. She's already been in touch with us to ask whether we're interested in taking cooking lessons.

I've always wanted to learn how to make authentic corn tortillas and guacamole!

Let us know if you're ready to indulge in a daily dose of the best guacamole you've ever tasted.
