"This country never ceases to amaze. All the arrangements you made for us made our trip exceptional. It's as if you had influence over the wildlife too. Even our "cool" teenager couldn't pretend to be blasé about our sighting of a family of black bears (from a safe distance). After today the "cool" veneer has been shaken off completely I think."

Canada

Oh Canada. Always polite, mild mannered, good humoured...but boring? Absolutely not.

Between three oceans, Canada's vast wilderness is unparalleled. It's a fascinating destination to see animals in the wild and whales on the ocean. Stunning mountain ranges in the Northwest are spattered with glacial lakes and winding riverbeds. Dense indigenous forests give way to seemingly endless prairies.

The abundance of natural beauty is interspersed with cosmopolitan cities, up-and-coming winelands, and a thriving arts scene. Canada's prolific contribution to music, film, and comedy is unquestionable and its lively festivals are world-renowned.

For family trippers and adventurers, Canada has something for everyone, including epicureans. From piping plates of poutine to hot maple taffy pulled fresh off the powdered snow, you'll soon discover there is nothing bland about this country.

A postcard from Canada...

This was our incredible experience of the day: We drifted silently in a small boat while a pod of playful Belugas frolicked in the waters around us. Without the motor running, all we could hear was their ethereal calls to each other (truly it sounded like laughing) while their tails and fins playfully smacked the surface of the water.

The mirror-still St. Lawrence transformed suddenly into roaring rapids. Only the occasional thunderous blow of a majestic Fin Whale would interrupt and we saw 3 pods of them further up the river.

After five weeks of traveling, there is so much more to see. We took a gloriously scenic train trip through the Rockies and arrived in Alberta, where we met a bona fide cowboy who guided us on horseback for two days in the foothills. You can imagine how much the boys loved that!

We camped overnight by an emerald river in superb tents that were ready for us at the end of the day's ride. A cook arrived (not really sure from where) to make us a scrumptious dinner of lake perch on an open fire. It was like living in a magical time warp.

We were just getting the hang of some French in time to leave tomorrow for the Maritimes. It will be our first time at a Lobster Festival. My bib is at the ready...bring on the melted butter!

Let us know if you too would like to drift amidst a pod of frolicking Beluga whales.
